What to Expect After Surgery
- Pain & Tightness: Moderate discomfort and tightness are normal in the first 1–2 weeks; pain medication will help.
- Drain Tubes: May remain for 3–7 days to prevent fluid build-up.
- Swelling & Bruising: Peaks in the first 10 days and gradually improves.
- Scar: The low horizontal scar fades and softens over 6–12 months.
- Mobility: Walk slightly bent at the waist during the first week to reduce tension.
- Garment: Wear continuously for 4–6 weeks as directed.
- Return to Work: Usually after 2–3 weeks, depending on your job type.
- Final Results: Visible after 3–6 months, with continued scar maturation up to one year.
Week 1 (Days 1–7)
- Wear your compression garment 24/7, removing only for hygiene if permitted.
- Empty drains and record output as instructed.
- Walk short distances indoors; maintain a bent posture.
- Sleep with head elevated and knees bent.
- Take prescribed painkillers, antibiotics, and anticoagulants if advised.
- Eat protein-rich, low-sodium meals and stay hydrated.
Week 2 (Days 8–14)
- Drain removal if output is minimal.
- Continue wearing garment full-time.
- Begin lymphatic massage 2–3 times/week if cleared.
- Increase light walking; avoid stretching or heavy lifting.
Weeks 3–4
- Continue massage and garment use day and night.
- Resume office work or light duties.
- Start gentle scar care once incision heals.
- Light treadmill or stationary bike permitted.
Weeks 5–6
- Reduce garment to daytime use if swelling decreases.
- Gradually increase gym activity (arms/legs only, no core).
- Continue scar massage and silicone therapy.
Weeks 7–8
- Resume most daily activities.
- Start gentle core activation and stretching if cleared.
- Begin scar laser or microneedling treatment if recommended.
Months 3–6
- Swelling significantly improves, revealing refined contour.
- Resume normal workouts including yoga and core strengthening.
Months 6–12
- Final results are stable with continued scar fading.
- Maintain steady weight and healthy lifestyle to preserve results.
Activity & Mobility Guidelines
- Week 1: Walk short distances indoors, always bent at the waist. Avoid stairs and lifting.
- Week 2: Gradually increase walking; avoid heavy lifting and bending backward.
- Weeks 3–4: Return to desk work; begin light movement such as treadmill walking.
- Weeks 5–6: Normal walking, light gym workouts without abdominal strain.
- Months 3–6: Resume full exercise routine gradually.
- Months 6–12: No activity restrictions; full recovery achieved.
When to Contact Dr. Ahmed Khazbak
Call Dr Khazbak immediately if you notice any of the following:
- Fever above 38°C (100.4°F) or chills.
- Severe pain not relieved by medication.
- Excessive swelling, redness, or sudden tightness in the abdomen.
- Persistent bleeding or foul-smelling drainage.
- Shortness of breath, chest pain, or leg swelling (possible clot).
- Opening of the incision or wound separation.
- Severe nausea or vomiting preventing food or fluid intake.
If you cannot reach Dr. Khazbak and symptoms worsen, visit the nearest emergency department immediately.
