Tummy Tuck Aftercare

Tummy Tuck with Liposuction – Post-Op Guide | Aftercare Template

1. Immediate Post‑Surgery (Days 1–3)

  • You will experience swelling, bruising, and tightness in your abdomen. Drains may be placed to prevent fluid buildup.
  • You’ll walk slightly bent at the waist to protect your incision. Rest in a semi‑bent position with pillows under your knees.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and avoid salt to reduce swelling.
  • Garment: Wear your compression garment continuously, except for short hygiene breaks.
  • Mobility: Short assisted walks every few hours prevent blood clots.
  • Diet: Focus on protein‑rich meals and hydration.

2. Drain Care (Days 1–7)

  • Drains help prevent fluid (seroma) accumulation. Empty the bulbs 2–3 times per day and record the amount and color.
  • Normal drainage will change from red to light yellow over time.
  • Drain removal: Usually occurs when drainage is below 30 ml in 24 hours for two consecutive days.
  • Keep the entry site clean and dry, and avoid pulling the tubing.

3. Early Recovery (Week 1–2)

  • You may still feel tightness and mild pain, which can be managed with medication.
  • Incisions start to close — continue gentle walking and light movements.
  • Do not lie flat; maintain a bent posture.
  • Compression garment should be worn day and night.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, twisting, or bending sharply.
  • By week two, swelling and discomfort will begin to reduce.

4. After Drain Removal & Lymphatic Massage (Week 2–4)

  • Once drains are out and incisions are sealed, you may start lymphatic drainage massage to help reduce swelling and improve contour.
  • Start: After 14 days post‑surgery.
  • Frequency: 2–3 sessions per week for 3–4 weeks.
  • Technique: Gentle, rhythmic strokes directed toward lymph nodes (groin and armpits). Avoid deep pressure on incisions.
  • Benefits: Helps reduce swelling, prevents fibrosis, and enhances smooth contour recovery.

5. Intermediate Recovery (Weeks 4–8)

  • Swelling continues to improve, and firmness of the abdomen begins to soften.
  • Some numbness may persist but will gradually fade.
  • Activities: Resume light office work and non‑strenuous walking.
  • Avoid abdominal exercises or gym workouts until after week 6–8.
  • Scar Care: Begin using silicone gel or tape once incisions are fully healed (after 3–4 weeks). Apply sunscreen on exposed scars.
  • Garment: Continue compression wear for at least 6–8 weeks in total.

6. Long‑Term Recovery (After 8 Weeks)

  • Most swelling subsides by 3 months. Final contour appears around 3–6 months post‑op.
  • You can gradually return to full physical activity, including abdominal exercise, after your surgeon’s approval.
  • Maintain a stable weight and avoid smoking or alcohol to optimise long‑term results.

7. Warning Signs – Contact Your Surgeon Immediately

Call your surgeon if you experience:

  • Fever above 38 °C
  • Increasing redness, swelling, or pain
  • Foul‑smelling or cloudy drainage
  • Sudden increase in swelling or seroma formation
  • Drain dislodgement or incision opening
  • Shortness of breath or calf pain (possible clot)

8. Recovery Overview Table

  • Days 1–3: Pain, drains active, garment worn continuously.
  • Week 1–2: Walking improves, drains removed, begin massage planning.
  • Week 3–4: Start lymphatic drainage massage.
  • Week 4–8: Resume light activity, start scar care.
  • Month 3–6: Final contour refinement and scar fading.
