Scar Care After Plastic Surgery

Scar Care & Management – Post-Healing Guide | Aftercare Template

General Principles

  • Scars are a normal part of healing and usually improve with time.
  • Proper care helps scars heal flatter, lighter, and less visible.
  • Full scar maturation usually takes 12–18 months.

Initial Protection (0–2 Weeks)

  • Keep incisions clean, dry, and covered as directed.
  • Do not apply creams, oils, or massage until wounds are fully sealed.

Scar Massage (Start Around 2–3 Weeks Post-Op)

Begin only once wounds are completely closed.

  • Linear massage: Move finger back and forth along the scar line.
  • Circular massage: Apply gentle circular motions over the scar.
  • Vertical massage: Move the skin side to side across the scar.
  • Duration: 5–10 minutes, 2–3 times daily.

Silicone Therapy

  • Use silicone sheets or gel once wounds are healed.
  • Apply daily for 2–3 months, or up to 12 months if needed.
  • Proven to reduce redness, thickness, and itching.

Sun Protection

  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen on scars for at least 12 months.
  • Helps prevent scars from becoming permanently dark.

Moisturization

  • Use fragrance-free cream or oil once wounds are sealed.
  • Keeps skin hydrated and reduces itching.

Additional Options After 3–6 Months

  • Steroid injections (e.g., triamcinolone) for raised or thick scars (keloids or hypertrophic scars).
