Facelift Surgery Aftercare
1️Immediately After Surgery (Day 0 – Day 2)
Swelling and bruising are expected around the cheeks, jawline, and neck, usually peaking within 48 hours. You may feel tightness as the lifted skin adjusts, and temporary numbness around the ears, cheeks, and neck. Discomfort is typically mild and controlled with prescribed pain medication. Small drainage tubes may be present behind the ears or under the chin to prevent fluid buildup. These are usually removed within 1–2 days. A compression bandage or facial garment will be applied to reduce swelling and protect your results.
Home Care:
- Keep your head elevated 30–45° at all times, even while sleeping.
- Avoid bending forward or turning your head sharply; move your upper body instead.
- Apply cold compresses gently around the cheeks (never directly on skin).
- Follow your prescribed medication schedule and stay hydrated.
- Do not smoke or drink alcohol during the early recovery phase.
2️ First Week (Day 3 – Day 7)
Swelling peaks around Day 3–4 and then begins to improve. Bruising may extend to the neck or chest. Front-ear stitches are often removed between Day 5–7. Uneven swelling or temporary asymmetry is common and will settle.
Self-Care Tips:
- Continue sleeping with your head elevated.
- You may shower once drains and outer dressings are removed (usually Day 3 onward).
- Continue wearing your support garment as advised.
- Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous movement.
- Expect mild itching or tingling — signs of healing.
Second Week (Day 8 – Day 14)
Bruising fades from purple to yellowish tones. Most stitches (around the scalp and ears) are removed. Mild skin tightness and tingling persist as nerves regenerate. Patients usually resume light work or social contact.
Care Routine:
- Continue wearing your garment at night.
- Start gentle cleansing and scar-care products once all sutures are removed.
- Avoid hair coloring or heat styling.
- Maintain good diet and hydration.
Weeks 3 – 4 (Early Recovery Phase)
Swelling subsides noticeably and facial definition improves. Numbness may linger near the ears and cheeks. Makeup can be used to camouflage discoloration if approved. Light physical activity such as walking is acceptable.
Care Instructions:
- Protect incisions from sun exposure (SPF 50+).
- Continue scar therapy and light lymphatic massage if prescribed.
- Keep skin moisturized and well nourished.
Weeks 5 – 6 and Beyond (Advanced Healing Phase)
Facial contour becomes smoother and more natural. Tightness gradually eases; minor firmness may remain for several weeks. Scars lighten and soften. Most patients feel fully recovered by 6–8 weeks, with continued refinement over months.
Care Routine:
- Resume normal physical activity once cleared.
- Continue consistent sun protection and scar care.
- Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.
